Looking at a project proposal today.
First things first. what interests me about IT?
Below are a few answers in ten words or less then get into the deep stuff further down red answers are mine
The IT area/subject I have most enjoyed is ….
All
The IT area/subject I least enjoyed is.....
none
The IT area/subject I was most interested in is......
Am interested in them all
The one IT thing I never want to have to do again is..............
Have not had enough experience to give an answer
I chose to study IT because I .......
I have always wanted to do it.
If I couldn’t study IT I would study...........
I would continue with my teaching career
When I was a kid I wanted to be....................
Video game developer
One IT thing I would like to know more about is ........
All and if thats not possible then as much of it as i can
Started out answering these questions with very little clarity or idea of what i was wanting to do. as i got further down the I seemed to start getting more and more specific with what I thought the project could possibly look like. I am still undecided whether it will be a Database or a software development one.
below are the questions and in red you will find my answers as i went through the process my answers are in red. its very much still a work in progress.
1. Broad Research/Project Interest Area
- Short description of the area of IT that interests you (explain it to me!)
Database development and software development are both areas that interest me.
- Why is it interesting to you?
I like problem solving and to a degree both these areas have some elements of problem solving. Software development in terms of telling your computer to do things and how it should be done and database in terms of how to organise data and store it so that its in a easy to manage order
- Three things you know about it
There are many things you have to consider
It's never as straightforward as it seems
There's usually more than one way to do it
Database
There is a process that goes into the development of an effective working Database
Chen’s Notation
Databases need to normalised to stop doubling up on information
Software development
There are multiple coding languages
Each have different purpose
There is also a process and structure that goes into the development of a app or program
- Three things you believe about it
That it is always evolving
It is constantly changing
- Three things you don’t know about it
That's it I don't know
But if i have to answer that
- Would you rather: Do something, Research it or Do both
both
- Go and see if you can find a few resources about it - (post URL) forum? facebook group? linkedin group? or a good blog? Or even academic articles :)
- AND - APA reference them in your writeup.
You can do more than one area of interest if you can’t decide!
2. Identifying a possible project
- Construct 10 (interesting!) questions about your topic
Identify three good questions/ideas
Developing a Whakapapa Database
Developing a iwi membership database that will allow iwi to analyse the demographic of its members and families and keep updated records.
Developing a cultural mapping app/website that can be used to get stories and history and genealogy that will help iwi members to learn the history and be able to take virtual tours of sites of significance.
If you get stuck for questions try using a different start word-
Who, How, When, Why, What, Where or maybe even What if or What else …
- For each of these 3 suggest what you could do to answer/explore it.
Look at how the database is going to work and what the purpose of it is
- What is the fundamental goal underlying each of the 3 questions?
3. Making a choice
- Choose one of the questions and make a more detailed description of what you would do to answer/explore the question i.e. the first draft of your list of activities
- Write a title for this possible project.
4. Ethical Issues
- What ethical issues might there be in my proposal?
Database
Only ethical issues i can think of is using personal information in the
development of your project and needing to get appropriate
permission to do it
development of your project and needing to get appropriate
permission to do it
Software Development
The material that you plan to use for the project is it your own?
5. IP (Intellectual Property) and Copyright (Creative Commons, Copyleft)
Any issues/considerations?
The only issue or thing to consider is whether it has already been done
That's the way to go :)
